Mexico is a growing market for soybeans and soybean meal, according to the U.S. Soybean Export
Council (USSEC). The United States exported nearly 132 million bushels of soybeans and almost 2.4 million tons of meal (100.6 million bushels) to that country during marketing year 2016.
The U.S. market share for soybeans and meal in Mexico is a dominant 86.9 percent and 91.6 percent,
respectively, according to USSEC.
KSC Administrator Kenlon Johannes said the trip demonstrated the importance of U.S. soybeanmeal
exports to Mexico’s poultry, pork and dairy industries

Mexican soybean and soybeanmeal buyers told Midwest farmers and suppliers in April they will
continue to purchase from the United States as normal if free trade between the two countries, especially for agricultural products, is not disrupted. Otherwise, South America is an option

Thailand - Soybean Meal

Soybean meal is the by-product of soybean oil refining operations which are currently dominated by a few processors in Thailand.  Soybean meal is typically used as a main protein source in animal feed manufacturing.   Nearly all domestic soybean meal production is derived from imported soybeans due to the low domestic soybean production.   In order to meet growing feed demand from Thailand’s livestock and poultry sectors, both domestic soybean meal production and soybean meal imports are expected to steadily increase in 2017 and 2018.  The U.S. market share regularly fluctuates depending on U.S. price competitiveness with other soybean meal suppliers such as Brazil, Argentina, and India.  U.S. soybean meal imports are forecast to decrease in 2017, due to competitive supplies from Brazil and Argentina, but are likely to increase in 2018 due to overall higher feed demand in Thailand.

Argentina & Brazil

Major Foreign Soybean Exporters and Importers

Since the early 1970s, soybean production in South America has expanded rapidly. Brazil now trails only the United States in soybean production. Brazilian soybean growing regions used to be concentrated in the south, relatively near the major ports. In recent years, soybeans have expanded into the vast farmland of the center-west states, as infrastructure improvements have cut internal transportation costs. Brazil's vast reserves of farmland could permit a continued significant expansion in soybean area, though expansion is currently limited because of insufficient transportation infrastructure. Argentina's soybean growing regions and crushers are located close to port facilities, where the country's highly developed crushing industry and relatively small domestic market makes it the world's largest exporter of soybean meal and oil. A lower export tax on processed commodities than on unprocessed commodities also favors the export of soybean oil and meal from Argentina. Recent increases in production by Argentine and Brazilian grain and oilseed producers could foreshadow continued gains on the strength of abundant undeveloped agricultural resources, more stable economies, and expanding trade liberalization, see:

From Brazil to China with Soy

Cofco International Ltd. has already overtaken some of the world’s oldest agricultural traders to become one of the biggest shippers of soybeans in Brazil, the top exporter. Now, the Chinese food giant is considering acquisitions that would extend its position even further.
The company is looking into buying warehouses and other facilities related to logistics deep in Brazil’s agricultural heartland, according to Valmor Schaffer, Cofco’s head for South America.
"There will be surgical investments in strategic areas," Schaffer said in an interview at Cofco’s regional headquarters in Sao Paulo. Most of the spending will be in Mato Grosso, Brazil’s top soybean state that accounts for a quarter of the country’s total output.
Cofco exported about 7 million metric tons of soybeans from Brazil in 2017, including shipments also made by companies recently acquired by the Chinese group, according to line-up data from Williams, a Brazilian shipping agency. That’s jumped from 2.4 million tons in the previous year. The figures only account for shipments where the exporting agency was disclosed, putting the nation’s total at 67.7 million tons last year. Brazil’s grain exporter group Anec pegs the total at 68.3 million.

Turkey Imports

Turkey’s growing poultry sector is dependent on soybeans as a major feed ingredient.  The poultry and feed industry have been investing in modern crushing facilities and are continuing to expand their capacities.  While domestic poultry consumption is increasing, so are new export markets such as Iraq and other neighboring countries which will further increase the demand for soybeans and protein feed sources by Turkey’s feed industry.  The U.S. continues to be one of the leading suppliers of soybeans for the Turkish market; however, regulations on biotechnology have interfered with the market periodically since October 2009.  In calendar year 2016, total U.S. exports of soybeans and soybean meal were worth $200 million.  For additional information on the soybean and oilseeds market, please see the Turkey Oilseeds Annual Report.

Soy trade @ a glance

  • Soy is a leguminous plant indigenous to China that requires a lot of water to grow.
Its beans consist of more than 36% protein, 30% carbohydrates, and high amounts of fibre, vitamins and minerals. It also consists of 20% oil, making it one of the most important sources of edible oil.
  • Soymeal accounts for over 60 % of world animal meal production and occupies a prominent position among protein feedstuffs used for the production of feed concentrates. Soybean oil is the second most important vegetable oil (after palm oil); it accounts for 25 % of global vegetable animal oils and fats consumption
  • In the major producing countries and particularly in Brazil, Argentina, Paraguay and the USA soybean contributes significantly to the total value added by the agricultural sector. In these countries, soybeans and its sub-products also occupy an important position in total export earnings. Among smaller
producers only India and Bolivia earn significant income from the exportation of soybean and derived products
  • China is by far the largest foreign market for American soybeans, taking about 56 per cent of its $22bn of exports
